My Second HKA Anniversary!

by

Going off of Mari’s last post, which she wrote on her birthday (happy birthday again!), I thought I’d jump in and announce that my two-year anniversary with HKA is just over a week from today. I wrote about my one-year anniversary last year, so I thought it was fitting to honor the occasion with a blog post once again. In last year’s post I talked about the changes I experienced during my first year at HKA, and my second year was no different. In the past year I welcomed a desk change and a promotion, and I also helped the rest of the staff welcome new clients and some new team members.

One of my favorite parts of working here has been the opportunity to meet the awesome people I work with every day. As a firm believer that you should strive to be a perpetual student and never stop learning, I wanted to share some of the things I’ve learned from the ladies at HKA.

Emily: She already summed it up in her last post, but the woman can do everything. Emily has been a great role model and my favorite source for sound advice on anything I could possibly need. I’ve learned a lot from her, but the thing that sticks out the most is the importance of spreading knowledge when you have it. Not only is she a PR rock star, but Emily is always willing to share her wealth of wisdom at any given time.

Robyn: Robyn is a force to be reckoned with. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone that is so easily thrown into a social situation. As someone that has always been on the reserved side, I admire Robyn’s ability to adapt to any situation and strike up conversations with people that I would find extremely intimidating. In PR, that’s definitely an important skill, so whenever I pick up the phone or meet someone new, I always think, “what would Robyn do?”

LaDonna: Our amazing office manager, LaDonna stays on top of all of us to blog, get our time sheets in, and keeps us on track with everything else by cracking the whip when we need it most. If I ever need any obscure office supplies, she’ll know where I can find them. Our master organizer, I would love to be half as organized as LaDonna is.

Anika: Anika is the girl who you want to go have lunch with, but will get you on the cover of a magazine later that day. I’ve learned from talking with Anika and hearing her conversations with other teammates and clients, that you can be professional and still maintain a down-to-earth, friendly personality. I think it’s a skill that’s often overlooked, but being able to make someone feel comfortable while simultaneously building their confidence in you as a professional is an invaluable skill.

Nicole: Nicole’s natural disposition is sweeter than the honey that the bees in our attic left us during their stay here. She deals with annoying salespeople that come into our office in the middle of the work day with ease and a smile on her face. I’ve learned from Nicole that even when you feel like Oscar the Grouch, a smile can go a long way, for you and everyone around you.

Inez: The old saying, “where there’s a will, there’s a way” may be overused, but from watching Inez in action for the past two years, I can see that it’s true. Inez handles PR for the Komen OC Race for the Cure year after year, and although she does great work all year-round, in times of extreme pressure, I swear this girl makes miracles happen. So besides learning that Inez is an awesome baker, I’ve also learned that buckling down and keeping your eyes on the prize really does work, even in the most chaotic situations.

Mari: When Mari joined the HKA team, she brought such enthusiasm with her that I think it was a breath of fresh air for all of us. No matter what task Mari is given, she attacks it with excitement and conviction. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and I’m so grateful to have her just outside my door for when I’m feeling my motivation level dip. I hope I can help her and our other teammates stay motivated and enthusiastic the way that she does!

Hilary: What have I not learned from Hilary? A PR maven who has run a successful business for 25 years; Hilary teaches me new things every day, often without even trying, and I look forward to learning much more as time goes on.

Well, I have to weigh in too. Another example of the stellar HKA team. Linda is a perfect example of why you should never overlook the talents and abilities of the quieter folks in the room. Linda is exceptionally talented and beloved by her teammates, clients, media friends, et al. And a crazy terrific hip hop dancer too! Congrats Linda on two awesome years on the HKA team!
